Hopeless Conversations: In session with Crunchy!

An honest interview series around mental health and drag: Volume 2 - Crunchy!

Written and edited by: Maisie Long and Rosie Collingwood

Next up in our interview series with incredible drag artists is .. Crunchy Noodle!

Who is crunchy?

Local to Kent, Crunchy is a disabled Afab Queen who describes their act as if the 60s met the 90s met the 2000's - so a real mash up of influences era wise!

Mental Health

Despite describing themselves as having a bright and lively persona both on and off stage, Crunchy is also honest about mental health. The 19-year-old is very open about nerves felt when performing, often leaning on the support of fellow Anxious Pickle queens such as Dickie Tummae and Emmapanda. Crunchy opened up to us about their struggles they deal with having Tourettes.

They said they are visible but one way they use to calm themselves backstage is by hyping themselves up with hand exercises. A popular technique used by many who struggle with the same disability.

As well as support from fellow queens and perfomers, Crunchy's biggest supporter is their mum. The pair often indulge in a bit of self care together - be it a face mask or watching a romcom. Crunchy says self care is so important in supporting mental wellbeing and we have to agree!

Advice

Crunchy's best piece of advice for their younger self? To not listen to what people said - you can do drag and be yourself no matter what gender! (Absolutely!!!) Crunchy's background in performance started on an acting course in Canterbury, where they became comfortable on stage. But it was at Dover Pride last year where they met some amazing drag artists and felt inspired to one day get on stage in drag themselves, to inspire neurodivergent people and prove that even with a disability you can truly do anything that you put your mind to!

 Quick fire time!

If you or anyone you know is struggling mentally please don't suffer alone and reach out for help.
